D. Daniel Engstrand, Jr., Esq.Dan Engstrand, Esq. co-founded the law firm with his late wife and partner, Dr. Wende A. Doniger, Esq.  Since her passing, Dan has continued practicing law as Doniger & Engstrand, PLLC.   Formerly associated with the prestigious law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, Senior Trial Attorney for the N.Y.C. Law Department in their Special Litigation and Medical Malpractice (SLAMM) Unit and Special Assistant District Attorney with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Dan Engstrand has tried numerous complex personal injury, medical malpractice and commercial cases to verdict in both the New York state and federal courts.  Dan has successfully acted as lead counsel in a major class action litigation in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York involving commercial litigation.  In addition to having argued novel issues of law before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in a Section 1983 civil rights litigation which resulted in a refinement of the qualified immunity defense for government employees, Dan has also appeared before the New York State Appellate Courts for the First and Second Departments. 

With over thirty years of experience as a trial lawyer, Dan Engstrand represents clients with serious personal injuries from accidents and medical mistakes to dog bites and elevator accidents  He also concentrates in all aspects of Commercial Litigation, divorce and family law appeals, guardianship proceedings, equestrian law, tax-exempt charities, estate planning and Federal Practice, focusing on Personal InjuryMedical MalpracticeCommercial and Corporate Litigation, Identity Theft, and Consumer Protection.  In addition, Dan Engstrand counsels small and medium size corporations and IRC Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations by applying a litigator’s perspective to their issues prospectively to help them avoid lawsuits in the future. 

Dan Engstrand is a graduate of St. John’s University School of Law where he graduated second in his class, magna cum laude.  He attended St. John’s Law School with a full academic tuition scholarship and was a member of the law school’s prestigious Law Review. 

Dan Engstrand is also the proud recipient of the following American Jurisprudence Awards:  New York Civil Practice I and II, Evidence I and II, Commercial Transactions, Corporations, Administrative Law, Agency, Trusts and Estates and Real Property. 

As an active participant in the Suffolk and Nassau County communities, Dan Engstrand’s pro bono activities involve being on the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York’s pro bono panel.  Dan was recently awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Award for for his work with the Nassau County Law Enforcement Exploring Program where he sits on its board of directors.  In addition, Dan Engstrand is a frequent lecturer at both the Suffolk and Nassau County Bar Associations in the fields of Federal Trial Practice, NYS Trial Practice, Identity Theft and IRC §501(c)(3) Charitable Organizations.  Dan Engstrand was an Officer of the Suffolk Academy of Law and was the past chairperson of the Federal Court Committee.  In addition, Dan Engstrand has taught Advanced Trial Advocacy for over ten years as an adjunct professor of law at his alma mater, St. John’s University School of Law.  Currently Dan Engstrand is a member of the New York State Grievance Committee for the Tenth Judicial District having recently been appointed to a four-year term by the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, Second Department.  In addition, Dan Engstrand is an Executive Director with the Alexander Hamilton American Inns of Court, one of the nation's premiere trial mentoring organizations for law students and newly admitted attorneys.  Dan Engstrand, Esq. was formerly Executive Counsel to the East End Police Foundation, an IRC §501(c)(3) charitable organization that assists police departments on the east end of Long Island with equipment and training.
